Rhinos hero Sinfield set to tackle Yorkshire Marathon

13th September 2017

Former Leeds Rhinos skipper Kevin Sinfield is to take part in this year’s Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon.

He will join thousands of other runners on the start line at the University of York on Sunday 8th October.

Oldham-born Kevin, 36, is taking on the challenge to raise money for the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, which supports children’s and cancer charities.

It will be the latest in a series of charity endurance events the seven-times Grand Final winner and former England captain has taken on since his playing days came to an end.

Earlier this year he completed the London Marathon in 3:30:53, was part of a team that conquered the 3 Peak Challenge – Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon – in aid of the Danny Jones Defibrillator Fund and in 2016, he ran the Asda Foundation Leeds 10K to raise money for the Leeds Rhinos Foundation.

The Yorkshire Marathon, now in its fifth year, was launched in 2013 and forms part of the legacy of the late Jane Tomlinson, who raised nearly £2m for charity while battling incurable cancer.

Kevin, who in 2014 received an MBE for his services to rugby league and is now the Rugby Football League’s director of rugby, said: While it was hard work, I enjoyed running the marathon in London and I’m really looking forward to tackling the distance again.

“I know the Yorkshire Marathon is a very popular event with a brilliant atmosphere and I’m sure it will be a great day.

“I’m delighted to be supporting the Jane Tomlinson Appeal. Jane was a truly inspirational figure who showed what can be achieved if you have the spirit and determination. It’s an honour to be running for the Appeal established in her name.”

Katie Bell, Fundraising Manager with the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, said: “We are enormously grateful to Kevin and the many other runners who are tackling the marathon in aid of the Jane Tomlinson Appeal. The money they raise will support the vital work of some excellent charities.”

The marathon is staged under the umbrella of Jane Tomlinson's Run For All, the group behind the popular Asda Foundation 10K Series, the Leeds Half Marathon and the Sheffield Half Marathon.
